Glenea Completes Complex Sludge Mains Diversion Project at Barking Riverside Station
Glenea, experts in civil engineering, managed a detailed sludge mains diversion project for Agility Alliance JV, a joint venture formulated between J. Murphy & Sons and Morrison Utility Services, located in Barking Riverside Station, London.
This project, part of the Thames Water London Infrastructure Programme, ran from May to July 2020, with an approximate value of £500,000.00, showcasing Glenea's adeptness in managing and executing intricate civil engineering projects.
Project Overview:
In the busy location of Barking, Greater London, Glenea was instructed by Agility Alliance JV to navigate through a pivotal project involving the diversion of approximately 115 meters of the existing 250mm diameter twin sludge mains between Beckton STW & Barking Riverside STW, preceding the construction programme of the proposed London Underground Barking Riverside Station.
Proposed Works:
Glenea, appointed by Agility Alliance, was tasked with the diversion of approximately 115 meters of the existing 250mm diameter twin sludge mains, ensuring a seamless transition amidst the expansive development and the upcoming construction programme of the London Underground Barking Riverside Station.
Project Specific Complexities:
The project presented several complexities, including the imperative from Thames Water to maintain the discharge of sludge between Beckton STW & Barking Riverside STW throughout the project. Additionally, to maintain the gradient of the existing sludge mains, trench excavations were required in the alluvium stratum, where groundwater levels would be purged.
Innovations & Solutions:
In collaboration with Thames Water & Agility Alliance, Glenea meticulously planned and coordinated the isolation of the existing 250mm diameter twin sludge mains, ensuring discharge was maintained throughout the works. Glenea designed & executed a traditional open cut trench methodology, allowing the proposed twin 315mm diameter pipeline to be installed at the desired depth & gradient, while adhering to strict environmental constraints to prevent groundwater contamination.
Project Outcome:
The project, culminating prior to the planned completion date and within budget, was met with satisfaction from Thames Water and London Underground. Glenea’s commitment to delivering high-quality civil engineering services was evident through the successful completion and stakeholder satisfaction, reinforcing our mission to meet and exceed client and community needs.
