Successful Execution of a Complex Sewer Outfall Project in Mount Pleasant, Clerkenwell
At Glenea, as an expert civil engineering firm, undertook this complex project on behalf of Agility Alliance JV, a joint venture between J. Murphy & Sons and Morrison Utility Services, situated in the urban location of Clerkenwell, London.
This project, part of the Thames Water London Infrastructure Programme, showcases Glenea's adept capabilities in navigating through intricate project complexities and delivering optimal solutions in wastewater management.
Project Overview:
In the heart of Clerkenwell, London, Glenea was entrusted by Agility Alliance JV to undertake a pivotal role in the Thames Water London Infrastructure Programme, navigating through a project valued at approximately £200,000.00, spanning from June to July 2020. The project spotlighted Glenea’s expertise in constructing a proposed DN225 combined sewer outfall, amidst the expansive development of the historical Mount Pleasant Sorting Office by Royal Mail.
Proposed Works:
Glenea, appointed by Agility Alliance, was tasked with constructing the proposed DN225 combined sewer outfall to the public wastewater network amidst a large-scale development. The development, commissioned by Royal Mail in 2015, encompassed nine buildings, offering a mix of office, retail, community, and residential spaces.
Project Specific Complexities:
Navigating through a highly active construction site, Glenea encountered several complexities including restricted access, limited working space, and stringent stipulations from Islington Council to minimize inconvenience to residents and local businesses. The project demanded an excavation depth exceeding 7 meters below ground level to achieve the desired outfall level relevant to the existing public sewer.
Innovations & Solutions:
In collaboration with the developer and Agility Alliance, Glenea ingeniously devised a solution involving the excavation of a 7-meter-deep sheeted shaft and driving a traditional timber heading. This ensured desired excavation depths were achieved while minimizing disruption. The DN225 combined sewer outfall was concluded with a 2100mm ø PCC manhole within the developer’s site, facilitating future connections.
Project Outcome:
The project, culminating prior to the planned completion date and within budget, was met with satisfaction from Royal Mail and the developer. Glenea’s commitment to delivering high-quality civil engineering services was evident through the successful completion and stakeholder satisfaction, reinforcing our mission to meet and exceed client and community needs.
